I don't see what you guys have against hearing a sound when somebody logs in. O:

Seems like something that would be quite useful to make a chat less... dead. I mean, I'm not one to sit there and check to see if the chat is still dead every three seconds. I really don't get how sounds can be bad other than when you're already in a conversation and you hear them every hree seconds when you know you're getting them.

flashchat is horribly bloated and slow and generally irc is light and simple and fast and if sounds are that big an issue if you connect to it via a multi-protocol IM client like pidgin or something you can probably get sounds of some description

I can't really install stuff when I'm not at home. Also I can't really even run IRC the way I want to when not at home. I can only use that embedded chat which is really eh. I really also can't see how it's bloated/slow, I mean there's like maybe a slight delay when receiving messages but I'm pretty sure irc has a delay too.

And yeah, I'm often at the library.

You'd probably have to have a miserable abysmal computer to say that Flashchat is any kind of significant drain. I think their update reduced the system problems though, since I'm running it right now with several other tabs open and firefox.exe is only taking up 60k and like 1% CPU. And I'm on a crappy laptop that is probably about to fall apart.
